The short explanation of this alert was:

From September 14 -16^th, leaders from more than 170 nations will meet at the United Nations in New York City.  This gathering of world leaders will focus on previously accepted international goals like helping every community get clean water, halting the spread of AIDS and malaria, and cutting extreme poverty in half.  Achieving these "Millennium Development Goals" would transform the futures and hopes of a generation.

The Bush Administration has already agreed to these goals, but now Oxfam is concerned that they might back out of their agreements.  We ask you to lend your voice to press our leaders to fulfill their pledges to some of the world's poorest people by recommitting their countries' will and resources to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).  Through the MDGs, we will build a safer, healthier and more just world.

Lobby your members of Congress

Contact your representative, and urge them to cosponsor the Millennium Development Goals legislation.  This House (H. Con. Res 172) measure is a congressional commitment of support for the MDGs.  Adding cosponsors now can increase attention at the World Summit to the urgent need to address global poverty and hunger.
