The short explanation of this alert was:
Over the past three years, the price of coffee has fallen almost 50 percent, and now hovers near a 30-year low. This has resulted in a widespread humanitarian crisis for 25 million coffee-growing families in over 50 developing countries. Unable to cover their costs of production, small farmers cannot earn the income necessary to feed their families, send their children to school, purchase essential medicines, and stay on their land.

The International Coffee Organization (ICO) could play a central role in developing solutions to the global coffee crisis. But without the participation of the US — the world’s largest coffee consumer, which withdrew from the ICO in the 1990's — the scope and power of the ICO is limited. Please email President Bush today. Tell him that the US should adopt a global strategy to respond to the coffee crisis that includes re-joining the ICO! [Your name will also be added to Oxfam's global petition to Make Trade Fair.]
