We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Oxfam America's eCommunity.US taxpayers subsidize as much as $16 billion in commodity support payments to US agricultural producers. An overwhelming 78% of these subsidies are directed at just 8% of producers - large scale farms that drive family farmers off the land and threaten rural life throughout the midwest and elswhere.
And that's not the only problem: misguided subsidies generate overproduction, which in turn leads to dumping of US commodities on international markets at prices well below the cost of production. Farmers in developing countries cannot compete, driving them further into poverty.
The Rural America Preservation Act (RAPA) would change this. Intoduced by Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Byron Dorgan (D-ND) and Chuck Hagel (R-NE), RAPA would close the loopholes and put a limit on the size of crop subsidy payments that farming operations can get. It would create a fairer playing field for family farmers both in the US and globally.
Contact Senator Mark Dayton and Senator Norm Coleman and urge them to sign on to the Rural America Preservation Act. Call them at 202-224-3121, or email them, using our campaign action center to the right.
