We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Oxfam America's eCommunity. The US government is violating the rights of the Western Shoshone to ancestral lands—rights that had been recognized as belonging to this Native American Nation by the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley. The government has allowed gold mining and military testing of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons; all on Western Shoshone lands without their consent. Denied fair resolution in US courts, the Western Shoshone have appealed to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD).
The Western Shoshone request asks CERD to help stop US violations against them, and to demand reform of US laws and policies that allow for the theft and destruction of indigenous lands.
CERD meets again next month to determine if it will continue its inquiry into US laws and policies affecting the Western Shoshone and other indigenous peoples within US borders.
To keep pressure on the US, the United Nations committee needs to know that the general public supports the Western Shoshone people. We need your support today! Please sign the petition as soon as possible and forward it to friends, family and others.
