Stop billionaires from profiting off poor countries' debt

Right now, 40 low-income countries and 1 in 5 middle-income countries are on the brink of a major debt crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, war in Ukraine and global inflation. This crisis is making it harder for countries to provide people with core services that fight poverty such as education and healthcare. More than half of this debt is owed to private companies like banks and is regulated right here in New York State. But the state laws regulating debt are being abused, forcing low-income countries to choose between keeping their hospitals and schools running or repaying billionaire hedge fund owners.

Oxfam is working alongside partners to pass critical reforms to New York state law like the New York Taxpayer and International Debt Crises Protection Act that would provide much needed relief to these countries.

Take action today by emailing your state senator and assembly member and urge them to co-sponsor the legislation >>
