Tell Biden: Stop Dangerous Gas Exports
Right now, the U.S. is the largest exporter of liquefied methane gas in the world. The Biden administration recently took bold action to safeguard our environment and communities by temporarily pausing new approvals of liquefied methane gas facilities, known as LNG.
Some in Congress are doing everything they can to stop the LNG pause—a pause that was enacted in the first place because liquefied methane gas is a potent fossil fuel that has devastating impacts on our planet and its people.
This is unacceptable. The U.S. must meet our global climate commitments, rapidly phase out fossil fuels, and invest in a just energy transition. The Biden administration has the authority to deny gas export permits and the responsibility to say “no” when the impacts and harms of these facilities outweigh their benefits to the public.
Sign your name and demand that President Biden and Secretary Granholm stop dirty and dangerous gas exports once and for all.
Message to President Biden and Secretary Granholm:
Thank you for your commitment to protect our climate and communities by pausing the licensing of more Liquefied Methane Gas (LNG) exports. I am concerned, however, that the U.S. is the world’s biggest exporter of liquefied methane gas. This is not only a huge step back from fossil fuel phaseout, but also undermines President Biden’s climate agenda and historic investments made through the Inflation Reduction Act.
LNG terminals are not only a menace to our environment, but also a source of pollution that disproportionately affects communities of color and low-income populations–communities already burdened by high cancer risks, respiratory hazards, and often at the frontlines of ever-worsening storms and hurricanes. If more LNG export facilities are approved, that would likely lock-in climate-polluting emissions for decades to come. That is unacceptable.
The Biden administration has a critical opportunity to reevaluate and establish an approval process that comprehensively considers the impacts of LNG export facilities on environmental justice, public health, climate, the economy, and national security. This reevaluation should prioritize meaningful frontline community participation, sustainability, the well-being of communities, and the long-term interests of the nation–including to ensure we keep climate change limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius, in line with our commitments to the Paris Agreement.
We must phase out this harmful and potent fossil fuel that has devastating effects on frontline communities and the climate.
Please join Oxfam’s call to action with environmental and frontline groups to decisively break away from fossil fuel infrastructure, including LNG terminals, and embrace the clean energy alternatives at our disposal.
