Fossil fuel companies and their CEOs have been receiving special treatment for far too long. Especially now, as communities have been decimated by the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change continues to threaten the health and livelihoods of millions around the world, these companies must pay their fair share.

Rather than encouraging ongoing investments in fossil fuel development that drives climate change and impacts the health of local communities, we should be using public money to drive investment in clean, green jobs; modernize our grid; and advance fossil free energy. This is one of the crucial steps that we need to take in the fight against climate change and to build back better.

The federal government supports the production of fossil fuels with an estimated $15 billion yearly in tax subsidies—in part because Big Oil continues to lobby Congress to prop up their industry. It’s appalling that we are still subsidizing fossil fuels, while these companies earn billions in profits. Meanwhile, fossil fuel CEOs continue lining their pockets and those of their shareholders, not creating new jobs for working Americans.

It’s time to end fossil fuel handouts in order to fund a just transition for our communities & futures. We can’t let the government support the corporations that are destroying the earth. As our elected officials pursue economic recovery from COVID-19, we are demanding that they ensure that recovery legislation is rooted in addressing our biggest challenges like climate change and growing inequality—this includes unrigging the tax system and addressing climate change by eliminating fossil fuel subsidies.

Enough is enough. We need to build momentum in Congress to end subsidies for the fossil fuel industry, because the health of all of us and our planet is at stake.

Sign your name now and demand that our members of Congress put an end to fossil fuel subsidies.
